Lucille Mardell May, the daughter of Hans and Dorothy Jessen Jacobsen, was born October 7, 1926, in Exira, Iowa and died September 19, 2009, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 11 months, and 12 days.
She was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira. She attended Exira Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1945. She attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska then worked for the Omaha World Herald for two years. Lucy returned to Exira and helped operate her fathers Kaiser-Frazier dealership in town. She worked at her fathers garage until it was totally consumed by fire. At that time, she also worked at her Uncle Bill Jacobsens gasoline station. In 1952 Lucy started working at the Exchange State Bank in Exira as a teller/bookkeeper.
In May of 1973 she was united in marriage to Franklin Jack May at the Exira Lutheran Church parsonage in Exira. Jack died September 5, 1981. Lucille took care of her mother until her death in 1986. Lucille continued to work at the bank until she retired in 1992. Lucille was a life-long member of the Exira Lutheran Church. She enjoyed collecting Christmas ornaments and trees to display them on and music boxes. Lucy moved to the Allen House in Atlantic, Iowa. Later she moved to the Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, IA in January of 2004. Every 4th of July Lucy would eagerly await her annual visit from her niece, Sandy.
Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were her parents; her brothers: Leo and wife Roberta (Bobbie) Jacobsen and Arnold Jacobsen; her brothers-in-law, Richard Skain and Robert May.
Survivors include her sister, Arlene Skain of Auburn, CA; her brother, Donald L. Jacobsen of Prescott, AZ; her half-brother, Michael Jacobsen of Milwaukee, WI; her sisters-in-law: Barbara Jacobsen of Surprise, AZ; Betty Jacobsen of Anaheim, CA; and Evelyn May of Audubon, IA; nieces and nephews: Ross and Connie May of Exira; Stephen and Alice May of Phoenix, AZ; and Jean Cavanaugh of Cedar Falls, IA; other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Honorary casket bearers will be David Bintner, David Jacobsen, Michael R. Jacobsen, Wayne Smith, Kenneth Struble, Hugh Hunter, Chris Rygh, Jon Woody and Art Repp. Casket bearers will be Dwight Jessen, Larry Jessen, Allen Woody, Robert Woody, Curtis Jacobsen and Mike Davis.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Sunday evening at 6:00 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira, IA.
