Luene M. Guthrie, 95, of Greenfield, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, where she had resided for the past seven years.
Luene Mildred Barnhouse was born in Beaver Township, Guthrie County, Iowa, on Feburary 28, 1913, the third of four children, to Emma Etta Mains and Charles Eldridge Barnhouse.
She attended country school and graduated from Casey High School in 1932.
Luene was united in marriage to Everett Veryl Guthrie on January 9, 1935, at her parent's farm home in Jefferson Township, Adair County, Iowa, and they were blessed with two children. Everett and Luene were lifetime residents of Adair County.
She was talented in playing the piano, sewing, quilting, writing poetry and short stories. Luene enjoyed bird watching, recognizing birds and their songs, and seeing the Canadian geese returning to the farm pond each spring. Summer vacations to many of the states over the years were also enjoyable for her.
Luene was active in the Jefferson Center United Methodist Church, Women's Society and the Sewing Circle. She was a member of the Jolly Time Club, Needlecraft Club and LB Hobby Club, as well as the Adair County Farm Bureau Women.
She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother, and she enjoyed the many family gatherings throughout the years. Luene will be remembered for her love and music and pleasant personality.
She is survived by her son, Lee Guthrie and his wife, Freeda; her daughter, Janna Nelson and her husband, Daryl; her grandchildren, Robin Mitchell and her husband, Joel, Miriam Springer and her husband, Troy, Deborah Chisholm and her husband, David, Rachel Guthrie, Christopher Nelson and Trevor Nelson; her seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Blanche Brandenburg; and many other relatives and friends.
Luene is preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Charles Barnhouse; her husband, Everett; and her brothers, Floyd and Wayne Barnhouse.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2008, at the United Methodist Church in Stuart, Iowa.
Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m., Monday at the church.
Burial will be in the Menlo Cemetery in Menlo, Iowa.
Hockenberry Funeral Home in Casey, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
