Lyle Joseph Scholl, 93, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa.
Lyle was born to Fred and Alta (Gissibl) Scholl on a farm south of Anita. Lyle, his brother Leo, and their father were classic German yeoman farmers their entire working careers. Lyle loved his popping John Deere tractors, loved watching hungry cattle lined up at a feed bunk, admired a clean, dark green field of corn, and always chuckled at a litter of baby pigs racing around their pen.
Lyle married Arlene Hamann in 1940 and raised two daughters, Jacqueline and Cheryl. Raising their girls was a big part of their lives, they seldom missed a school or 4-H event. Their house was always open to the girls' friends. Lyle and Arlene were active members of the Anita United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, and Lyle was a 72-year member of the Masonic Lodge. They still had time for square dancing, bowling, and the pinochle dinner club. After the girls married, they eagerly assumed the role of grandparents. Sue and Scot Bailey spent many hours growing up at Grandpa and Grandma's house. When they were in high school, Lyle and Arlene followed all of their activities. Later when Alison was born, they spent even more grandparent time as Cheryl finished her master's degree. Lyle had a job he loved, feeding and entertaining Alison, while Arlene fixed supper. Sara was born just six months after Alison, and Lyle called the cousins his "little girls" the rest of his life.
Following retirement from the farm, Lyle became a wood carver. Many beautiful diamond willow canes, toy cars and carved animals became gifts to family and friends. Retirement gave Lyle and Arlene time to enjoy many bus tours throughout the US and Canada. Lyle joyfully shared stories of every life event.
