Mabel J. Thompson

Mabel Johanna Thompson, the daughter of Claus and Emily Newman Hultquist, was born September 17, 1921, at her parents’ home near Griswold, Iowa and died August 10, 2012, at the Hospice with Heart in Glenwood, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 23 days. Mabel attended rural school by her parent’s home near Griswold then helped on the family farm. On October 25,1938, she was united in marriage to Floyd Lockhart by the Justice of the Peace in Missouri. Four children were born to this union: Roger, Maynard, Delores, and Duane. Mabel was a homemaker for many years. In the early 1960’s she was employed as a waitress at the Starlin Café in Grant, Iowa for several years. In 1968, they moved to Villisca, Iowa where Mabel managed the Marsh Café for a short time. They moved to Lewis, Iowa and Mabel was a waitress at the Shamrock Café at the Valley south of Brayton, Iowa. On November 20, 1971, she married Dalton Leroy Thompson in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. They lived east of Brayton, Iowa where Mabel helped Dalton operate his tiling business. They retired from the tiling business and Mabel helped Dalton raise horses. First they raised award winning Belgians and later award winning ponies. They would show the horses at many county fairs and state fairs. Dalton died October 8, 2001. Mabel then went into partnership with Betty Johnston and operated the Brayton Café until she retired at the age of 82. Mabel lived on the farm then bought a home in Exira. In January of 2012 she moved to Glenwood, Iowa to live with her daughter Dee. In May she moved to the Hospice with Heart. Mabel was baptized as a Christian and was a member of the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton. She enjoyed dancing and playing cards. But most of all she loved to cook and bake pies. For a number of years Mabel and Dalton played Mr. and Mrs. Claus for the Brayton Christmas Party. Preceding her in death were her husbands: Floyd Lockhart and Dalton Thompson; her grandsons: Rodney Tye and Rex Thompson; her parents; her brothers: Carl Hultquist and Clarence Hultquist; her sisters: Esther Hultquist; Edna Keeton; and her nephew Mervin Keeton. Survivors include her children: Roger Lockhart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Maynard and wife Jean Lockhart of Sheridan, Wyoming; Delores (Dee) and husband Dennis Tye of Glenwood, Iowa; Duane and wife Kathie Lockhart of Rozet, Wyoming; her step children: Gary and wife Linda Thompson and families of Stuart, Iowa; Carolyn and husband Ron Kelley and families of Wiota, Iowa; her grandchildren: Edward and wife Anita Lockhart of Sheridan; Richard Tye of Council Bluffs; Amber and husband Matt Tschacher of Hot Springs, South Dakota; Michael and wife July Lockhart of Gillette, Wyoming; Arron Lockhart of Rozet, Wyoming; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; her niece Kay Keeton of Elliott, Iowa; other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Oakfield Cemetery east of Brayton.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, Iowa.
