Marilyn Dorthea Young

Marilyn Dorthea Young, the daughter of Robert C. and Mae (Stone) Christensen, was born January 25, 1921, at her parent’s home in Exira, Iowa and died October 27, 2012, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 91 years, 9 months, and 2 days. Marilyn was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira. She attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1938. Marilyn attended a business school in Omaha, Nebraska, then returned to Exira and was employed as a bookkeeper for Kozy Manufacturing. In 1942, she was united in marriage to Wayne “Stub” Johnston in Maryville, Missouri. They lived in Exira their entire married life. Wayne died March 5, 1975. On January 21, 1977, she married Clarence Lester Young, Jr. by the Methodist Minister in Oakland, Iowa. They lived in Essex, Iowa but Marilyn continued doing the bookkeeping for the Godwin family. Lester died in June of 1980 and Marilyn returned to Exira. She continued working for the Godwin family for a total of over 60 years retiring in 2010. She was also the bookkeeper and sexton for the Exira Cemetery for a number of years. Marilyn moved to the Exira Care Center in June of 2010. She loved to travel and enjoyed playing cards. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husbands: Wayne “Stub” Johnston and Clarence Lester Young, Jr.; her parents; her brother Robert A Christensen; and her brother-in-law Robert K. “Bud” Leigan. Survivors include her sister: Noreen Leigan of Exira, Iowa; her step-children: Ronald J. and wife Carol Young of Beatrice, Nebraska; Sharon K. and husband Craig Leigan of Shenandoah, Iowa; Karen A. and husband John Podzamsky of Minonk, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; her nieces: Mary and husband Dan Anstey of Cumberland, Iowa; Charlotte and husband Chuck Thorson of Atlantic, Iowa; her great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira, Iowa

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
