Marilyn Marie Smith, the daughter of Peter and Marie Rasmussen Brown, was born March 29, 1925, at her parents home in Oakfield Township, west of Brayton, Iowa and died April 7, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 85 years and 8 days.
Marilyn was baptized and confirmed at the Oakhill Lutheran Church west of Brayton, Iowa. She attended rural school in Oakfield Township and later attended Exira Community Schools, graduating with the High School Class of 1943. After high school Marilyn worked at several different cafes around the Brayton area.
On December 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Frank Smith at the Oakhill Lutheran Church west of Brayton. Four children were born to this union. Marilyn and Frank lived east of Brayton where she was a homemaker and helped Frank on the farm.
Marilyn was a member of the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton where she was a long-time treasurer of the WELCA. She was very active with the Brayton Lutheran Quilters and the Keenagers. She was a member of the Brayton Legion Auxiliary where she served as the treasurer for the past 60 years. She was a member of the neighborhood Sunshine Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother-in-law Mack Smith and her sister-in-law Marguerite Johnson.
Survivors include her husband Frank Smith of Brayton, IA; her children: Diane and Earnest Janning of Glidden, IA; Jane and Larry Faust of Omaha, NE; Michael and Susan Smith of Brayton; Beth and Rick Kostopoulos of Naperville, IL; her grandchildren: Shawn Janning of Glidden; Rahna and Randy Buschmann of Sioux City, IA; Stacy Janning of Carroll, IA; Jamey and Dan Cromer of Glidden; Christopher Faust and David Faust, both of Omaha; Benjamin Smith, Andrew Smith, Joseph Smith, Anna Smith, and Thomas Smith, all of Brayton; Adam Kostopoulos, Alec Kostopoulos, Matthew Kostopoulos, and Allison Kostopoulos, all of Naperville; her great-grandchildren: Keagin Buschmann, Kenton Buschmann, Kenleigh Buschmann, and Kennick Buschmann, all of Sioux City; her brothers and sisters: Earl and Jean Brown of Amana, IA; Margery and Roy Middaugh of Glidden; Everett and Louise Brown of Indianola, IA; her sister-in-law Corrine Smith of Exira, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in Oakfield Cemetery, east of Brayton.
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Friday evening at 6:00 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira and also Saturday morning at 9:30 until time of service at the Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at Brayton Lutheran Church in Brayton, IA.
