Marvin Jorgen Sorensen

Marvin Jorgen Sorensen, the son of Soren E. and Violet Petersen Sorensen, was born June 23, 1923, at his parents’ home in Exira, Iowa and died January 25, 2013, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 7 months, and 2 days. Marvin was baptized and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira. He grew up in the Exira area and attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1940. He then helped his father in the livestock business. On February 9, 1943, he was inducted into the United Sates Navy. He served as a Radioman on the USS Minneapolis in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on January 23, 1946 and returned to Exira and farmed with his brother Leo. On June 20, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mardell Martin at the Federated Church in Exira. Three children: Craig, Charles, and Jane were born to this union. He farmed southeast of Exira for 14 years and then moved to an acreage south of Exira. Marvin was a livestock buyer and producer until he retired. He moved to the Exira Care Center in November of 2012. He enjoyed fishing and enjoyed reading especially his Bible and other religious books. Marvin was a member of the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira and served on various organizations within the church and was a choir member. He was a member of the American Legion Ballou Post #332 in Exira and the VFW Post #4119 in Audubon, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother Leo Sorensen; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mildred and Harold Cochrane; Norma Sorensen; and Robert Worthington; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Keith and Edith Martin. Survivors include his wife of 65 years Mardell Sorensen of Exira, Iowa; his son: Craig (Bub) and wife Jan Sorensen of Exira and their children Brandy and husband Randy Fiebelkorn of Exira; Nichole and husband Bryan Towlerton of Altoona, Iowa; Angie and husband Matt Immel of Adair, Iowa; Dusty Sorensen of Des Moines, Iowa; his son Charles (Chuck) and wife Connie Sorensen of Exira and their children Kevin Sorensen of West Des Moines, Iowa; Sheri and husband Keith Wede; Staci and husband Chris Johnson all of Round Rock, Texas; his daughter Jane and husband Ross Johnson of Bakersfield, California and their children Jill Johnson; Ross, Jr. and wife Mary Johnson all of Bakersfield, California; 17 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; his sister and brother: Ramona Worthington; Dale and wife Joyce Sorensen all of Clear Lake, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in Exira Cemetery in Exira.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock and Pastor Ray Holmquist on Tuesday, January 29, at 10:30 A.M. at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira, Iowa.
