Mary Elizabeth Christensen, the daughter of David H. and Ethel C. Mullenger Christensen, was born August 17, 1918, at her parents home in Hamlin Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died March 24, 2009, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 90 years, 7 months, and 7 days.
Mary was baptized November 11, 1918, and confirmed April 8, 1934 at the Hamlin Lutheran Church in Hamlin, Iowa. She attended rural school Hamlin No. 5 in Hamlin Township. Mary then helped at home. After World War II, in 1946, Mary moved with the family into Audubon. Mary worked as a home aide for many families in the area. She then was employed at the Friendship Home in the housekeeping department until she retired. Mary enjoyed her home then has been a long-time resident of the Friendship Home in Audubon.
Mary has been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon since March 30, 1947, and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Audubon Historical Society and several neighborhood card clubs. Mary enjoyed caring for her family taking care of her sister and brothers. She enjoyed baby-sitting for her nieces and nephews teaching them games and how to play cards.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers: Daniel and Hazel Christensen, Grant and Clara Christensen, Luther Christensen, Elbert and Geneva Christensen, Frank Christensen, her brother-in-law Robert Ruhs and her niece Sandra K. Olesen.
Survivors include her sister and brother: Norma Ruhs and Chester Christensen, both of Audubon, IA; her sisters-in-law: Sarah Christensen of Audubon and Wilma Christensen of Underwood, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and dear friends: Rosemary Zaiger and Betty Sievers, both of Audubon.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Hamlin Lutheran Cemetery in Hamlin, Iowa.
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Thursday evening at 6:00 at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dwayne Ferguson and Pastor Steven Frock on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in Audubon.
