Mary "Elizabeth" Houchin, 97, of Atlantic, Iowa, (formerly of Anita), passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007, at the Heritage House in Atlantic.
Mary Elizabeth Houchin was born May 18, 1910, on a farm in Adair County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Pearl (Crees) Anderson.
She attended rural school in Adair County and graduated from Greenfield High. After graduation she attended Junior College in Creston, Iowa. Elizabeth taught school in rural Adair County after graduating and then again in the 1950's for several years.
On February 18, 1930, she married Bernard Houchin. He passed away on December 29, 1981. She and Bernard lived on the same farm until they retired in 1973 and moved to Anita.
Elizabeth was an active member of Anita United Methodist Church and Silver Thread Club. She enjoyed reading, Bible study, and quilting.
She is survived by her son, Jim Houchin and his wife, Betty of Casa Grande, Arizona; daughter, Mary Asleson and her husband, Hugh of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Steve Houchin and his wife, Peggy of Loveland, Colorado, Jeff Houchin and his wife, Debbie of Loveland, Colorado, Cathy Dundon and her husband, John of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Joni Casey and her husband, Craig of Overland Park, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Joshua Houchin and his wife, Helga, Lindsey Best and her husband, DeWayne of Loveland, Colorado, Hank and Amelia Dundon, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Colin and Nicole Casey of Overland Park, Kansas; three great great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Raymond in infancy, John, Kenneth and James; and three sisters, La Vern, Margaret and Shirley.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 16, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Anita with Pastor Bonnie Peterson officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita. There will be no visitation prior to the funeral but the family invites you to join them for a luncheon, following the committal service, at the Anita Community Center.
Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund or the Anita United Methodist Church.
