Mary Karwal

August 31, 1916 — March 29, 2009

Mary Elizabeth Karwal, an eight-year resident at Colonial Manor of Anita,Iowa, succumbed peacefully to pneumonia at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, the evening of March 29, 2009.

She was delivered by her Grandfather, Dr. W.R. Koob, to Kathleen Koob Miller and Harry Miller at their home in Brayton on August 31, 1916. A graduate of Exira High, Mary was a farm wife west of Brayton for fifteen years, a teacher at several Audubon County country schools beginning in 1951, and the Exira and Audubon public systems, retiring in 1978.

Mary began her teaching career with a Normal Training Certificate from high school and received her Bachelors Degree in Education at Drake University in 1962, after many years of traveling to extension classes in Des Moines.

She was a member of the Atlantic Does, Iowa Teachers Assn., Nishna Hills Golf Club and the Brayton American Legion Auxiliary, Ballou Post.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years, Harold Lester Karwal, in 1998, and her youngest son, Bill, in 2007.

She is survived by younger sister, Isabel Murray of Wilson Creek, WA; daughter-in-law Donna Karwal of Atlantic; son Joe Karwal and wife Norma of Yuba City, CA; seven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life is scheduled at Hockenberry's Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, at 10:30 a.m. with the Atlantic D.O.E.S. serving lunch following the service in the community room at Hockenberry Family Care.
