Mary E. Rochholz, 99, of Fontanelle, Iowa, and formerly of Adair, Iowa, passed away Monday evening, October 30, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in Fontanelle.
Mary McMurphy Rochholz was born on August 8, 1907, in Adair County, Iowa, the daughter of Alexander and Ella (Oaks) McMurphy.
Mary graduated from Adair High School in 1925. In 1964 she graduated from Drake University in Des Moines and subsequently earned credits towards a master's degree. Mary taught school in Guthrie County from 1951 to 1959, then taught in the Adair school system until retiring in 1972.
She was married to Lloyd B. Rochholz on March 10, 1926. They farmed in Guthrie County until 1944, when they moved to Adair.
In 1972, she was one of a group of local citizens who worked toward the establishment of the senior citizen's group meals program in Adair. Mary was the first site manager, retiring from the job in the mid-80's. She was a member of the Happy Hour Club for over 75 years. Mary was an avid gardener and cook all of her life.
Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Adair, where she served as an elder. She was also a member of the Westminster Auxiliary and held various offices in that organization.
Mary is survived by daughters, Evelyn Ringquist of Alexandria, Louisiana, Marjorie Parisho of Hayward, California, and Donna Soper and her husband, Gerald of Adair, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two sisters; her husband; and a daughter, Myrna Emgarten.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Adair, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, November 2nd at the Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair.
Burial will be in Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair.
