Maxine Butler

July 26, 1920 — July 15, 2013

Maxine Iona Marxen was born July 26, 1920, in Lewis, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore Ludwig and Hazel Wilhelmina (Jahnke) and passed away Monday, July 15, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa.

She graduated from the Lewis High School as Salutatorian of the class of 1937.
On November 27, 1937, Maxine was married to Robert Butler at the United Methodist Church in Red Oak, Iowa. The couple moved to Atlantic in the early 1950s, where Maxine resided until she became a resident at Salem Lutheran Home in 2012.

Maxine was a member of the Christian Church and later attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, both in Atlantic.

She was an avid reader, reading a book a day when she was able. Maxine spent many hours studying her Bible, making entries of important ideas and her thoughts in the margins. In her later years, Maxine had developed an interest in biblical archeology and politics.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Butler; her son, Ron Butler; her parents, Theodore and Hazel Marxen; her brother, Henry Marxen; and her parents-in-law, Minnie Butler and Roy and Hilda Butler; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Art and Phyllis Decker, Carl and Maxine Miller, Rex and Shirley Butler, Clifford Conklin Jr. and Ruthie Butler.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Barb (Dallas) Strand of Atlantic; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeff) McDonald of Des Moines, IA, Paul (Stephanie Lengtat) Strand of Des Moines, IA, Jeff (Sara) Strand of Atlantic, IA and Shelly (Wayne) Volkl of Alburnett, IA; her great-grandchildren, Drew Strand, Dalton, Levi McDonald and Kevin Stenstrom all of Des Moines, IA, Riley Strand of Atlantic, IA, Megan (Nick) Carda of Des Moines, IA and Rachel Volkl of Alburnett, IA; her great-great-granddaughter, Emma Malmberg of Des Moines, IA; her sister-in-law, Betty Conklin of Atlantic; and brother-in-law, Bill Butler of Sun City, AZ.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 18, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Please join Maxine's family for lunch and time for visiting in the Hockenberry Family Care community room following the graveside service.
