Maxine J. Orstad, 89, of Griswold, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 10, 2011, at the Cass County Hospice Center.
Maxine June Orstad was born June 15, 1921, on a farm near Grant, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Louise (Lindner) Vetter. She attended school in Grant and graduated in 1939 from Grant High School. She was united in marriage to Russell Orstad on December 8, 1945, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. Russell and Maxine lived near Grant for many years until moving into Grant in 1988.
She was active in her church, being treasurer for many years. She was also involved as a 4-H leader, member of the United Methodist Women, Thimble & J.U.G. Clubs, and worked at the Grant Food Market for many years. She and Russell spent many happy hours square dancing while they were members of the Square Dance Clubs in Grant and Corning.
Maxine enjoyed sewing and quilting, furnishing her family and friends with many quilts over the years. Her greatest pleasure came from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding Maxine in death were her husband, Russell; her parents; one sister, Loretta Barr; a great-grandson, Trevor Frederickson; and brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Surviving Maxine are her daughters, Janet Cappel and husband Tom and Diane Petty and husband Duane all of Atlantic; her son, Dean Orstad of Griswold; 13 grandchildren, Kelly Cappel, Tom (Wendy) Cappel II, Tim Cappel, Trent (Crystal) Cappel, Troy Cappel (Megan Phipps), Todd Cappel, Dent (Cindy) Petty, Darrin (Melanie) Petty, Dustin (Kylie) Petty, Nick Orstad, Tony (Jeri) Orstad, Lucas Orstad (Courtney Sholly) and Mariah Orstad; 11 great-grandchildren, Colton and Aaron Suhr, ReAnn, Trey and Tenley Cappel, Austin, Tyler, Taryn, Bryn and Grant Petty and Laena Frederickson. Maxine also leaves a sister, Dorothy Gridley; a brother, Merlin Vetter; sisters-in-law, Deloris Weaver and Jeanne Orstad; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 14, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Grant.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.
