Maxine Shewman

Dora Maxine Shewman, 95, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa where she had been a resident for the past 10 years.

Maxine was born June 18, 1918 in Grant, Iowa. She was the daughter of Marshall and Stella Mae (Kuhn) Anderson and grew up in the Nodaway and Villisca area. She had two sisters, Dorothy (Burt) Clayton of Waterloo, IA and Bessie Mae (Martin) Myers of Loveland, CO. She attended Nodaway schools and graduated from high school always wanting to be a nurse. She was united in marriage to Carl William Shewman in Clarinda, Iowa. They lived throughout their marriage in Anita, Corning, Cumberland, Greenfield, Macksberg, Massena, Villisca and Winterset then settling in Atlantic, Iowa in 1962.

Maxine became a nurse's aide at the old Atlantic Hospital. She later retired in 1971. She was an active member in the United Methodist Church and as a volunteer with the women's auxiliary at the Church, the Cass County Memorial Hospital and the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center even after she became a resident at the Center.

Maxine was a very kind, giving person and always helped others. She enjoyed reading and had a great memory. She was an excellent gardener, farm wife, cook and baker. Her cinnamon rolls and cookies were the best. Maxine loved her family more than words can describe. She enjoyed family gatherings and her grandchildren were her life.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters; her husband; her son-in-law Leo Darwin Anstey; her grandson-in-law James Edward Knott and her great-great grandson Keegan James North.

Maxine is survived by her daughters: Beverly JoAnn Anstey of Ralston, NE, Patricia Sue (Robert Sr.) Salzman, Kathy Jo (Michael) Bustos of Omaha, NE. She was very proud to have six grandchildren: Peggy Lee Anstey-North, Deborah Jo Knott, Sheila Kristine (Thomas II) Brown, Vicky Sue (Brian) Johnson, Robert Allen (Nina) Salzman Jr., Gabriel Alexander Bustos; nine great grandchildren: Christina Camille (Paul) Shimerdla, Cassandra Kay North, Thomas Clayton Brown III, Melissa Sue Johnson, Carrie Ann Johnson, Justina Marie Salzman, Joseph Robert Salzman, Jessica Rose Salzman, Matthew Lawrence Bustos and two surviving great-great grandchildren: Kristilee Sue Finch, Logan Wesley Shimerdla.

In lieu of flowers, Maxine's family asks that memorials be directed to the family.

Visitation with family will be Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m., prior to the service at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa.

Burial will be in Prairie Rose Cemetery, southeast of Corning, Iowa.

Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
