Melvin C. Wedemeyer, 90, of Adair, passed away November 29, 2007, at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center.
Melvin Chris Wedemeyer was born on December 18, 1916, on the family farm in Guthrie County, Iowa, the son of George and Alma (Christensen) Wedemeyer.
He graduated from Adair High School in 1936. Following graduation he joined the United States Army. Melvin was a Staff Sergeant and was stationed in Bermuda and the United States, as well as other various places, during WWII.
On October 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Norma Nord in Evanston, Illinois. They lived in Adair for many years until recently moving to Guthrie Center.
Melvin was a member of the Adair United Methodist Church and the Adair VFW Post #8877.
He enjoyed going to gun shows, reading and was interested in collectibles.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Norma of Guthrie Center, IA; son, Douglas N. Wedemeyer and his wife, Jan of Adair, Iowa; daughter, Deborah Wedemeyer of Decorah, Iowa; grandchildren, Jared Wedemeyer of Guthrie Center, Iowa, Eric Wedemeyer of Adair, Iowa, and Ben Wedemeyer of Emmetsburg, Iowa; and his cherished sisters-in-law, Helen Thomas and Sylvia Nord of Libertyville, Illinois.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Alma Wedemeyer; and two brothers, Donal and Bernal Wedemeyer.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2007, at the Adair United Methodist Church in Adair, with Reverend Lynn Gardner officiating.
Burial will be in the Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair. The family invites you to join them for fellowship and lunch following the cemetery services.
Open visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, December 2, 2007, at the Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Adair, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
