Merle Elmer Stangl, 92, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2016, at the Allen Place in Atlantic, Iowa.
Merle Stangl was born April 9, 1924, in Mount Carmel, Iowa. He was one of 13 children born to Frank and Julia (Bruning) Stangl. He graduated from Carroll Public High School. In 1950, he and his wife, Phyllis, moved to Atlantic and began farming. There they raised five children. Merle was also a self-employed carpenter. His life goal was to farm for 50 years, a goal he accomplished at the age of 75. His other life goal was to make sure his children received the education they wanted. His children all earned degrees ranging from nursing to PhD.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Phyllis.
He is survived by his five children, Denice Ecker (Jim), Omaha, NE, David Stangl (Ida), Tulsa, OK, Daryl Stangl, Fairfield, IA, Dalene Stangl (Rick Richardson), Durham, NC, Dawn Stangl (Richard Schulze), Des Moines, IA; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeremy, Jamie, Sarah, Andrew, Nick, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Brian; and seven great-grandchildren, Caden, Calhan, Kai, Seth, Ben, Patrick John and Autumn.
Visitation with family will be from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 17, 2016, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa, with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic, Iowa.
Memorials may be left to the families wishes.
