Michael Leed

Michael Norman Leed was born March 4, 1944, in Council Bluffs, IA the second child of Norman Edward Leed and Shirley Elizabeth Zobrist. He grew up on the family farm east of Hancock, IA attending Hancock Elementary and Jr. High. He graduated from AvoHa High School in Avoca, IA with the Class of 1962. He attended Northwest Missouri State College and Clarinda Jr. College.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1963 with two of his best high school buddies. He was united in marriage to Judy Wunder at Trinity Lutheran Church, Avoca, IA January 8, 1966. To this union two children, Amber and Ryan, were born.

Mike served in the Vietnam War and was then stationed in California where he received his discharge and worked for United Airlines in San Francisco. The family returned to Iowa in 1970 and have resided in the same home in Anita since then. He was employed at Dana Bearing Manufacturing in Atlantic as CNC technician for 29 years, retiring in 2006. He was a member of Anita Legion Post 210 and Anita United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees.

Mike was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening as well as many hobbies of building and flying model airplanes, restoring his '37 Chevy hotrod, and Harley police bike. He formerly had obtained his private and commercial pilot's licenses which he recently updated with son Ryan as instructor. He loved taking his family fishing, boating and camping. His greatest joy was spending time with the grandkids and his special dog, "Fritz".

He lost his brave 5 year battle with cancer and went home to his Lord on January 29 at Bergan Mercy Hospital Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Norman Leed; and nephew, Scott King.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother, Shirley Leed of Griswold; his wife of 48 years, Judy; daughter, Amber Leed-Kelly (Brian) of Omaha; son, Ryan (Julie) Leed of Ida Grove; grandchildren, Reagan and Elena Kelly and Garrett, Faith, and Gage Leed; sisters, Phyllis (Larry) King of Emerson, Kathy Fay of Winterset, Uncle Dick Leed and special great Aunt Arline Gans; along with other relatives, special neighbors and many friends.

Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2014, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa.

A memorial service is planned for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Anita, Iowa.
