Michael Nissen Hjuler

Michael Nissen Hjuler, the son of Donald Nissen and Darlene Gertrude (Sextro) Hjuler, was born July 18, 1959, in Audubon, Iowa, and died November 1, 2018, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 59 years, 3 months and 13 days.
Mike was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon, Iowa. He attended the Audubon Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1978. During high school Mike was involved in vocal music and held leading roles in several musicals that were presented by the school. Also while in school, he worked for the Manatt’s and for Talbot’s. Following high school, he took several college courses.
Mike worked at Farmland in Oakland, Iowa, for a short time before becoming a custodian at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He moved to Carlisle, Iowa, and began as a meter reader for Mid-American Energy, he then constructed gas lines and later worked to become an inside control room operator until he had to retire due to his health issues.
Mike loved hunting, fishing and just being outdoors. He enjoyed visiting casinos and was an avid Chicago Cub’s fan. He enjoyed watching other sports and attending musical concerts. But most of all, he enjoyed his family especially his nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents; Frank and wife Lorine Sextro and Pete and wife Esther Hjuler.
Survivors include his parents Don and Darlene Hjuler of Audubon, Iowa; his brothers and sisters Mark Hjuler of Killeen, Texas; Debbie Campbell of Audubon, Iowa; Denise and husband Steve Purdy of Denison, Iowa; Craig and wife Lorna Hjuler of Spring, Texas; and Donna and husband Paul Lauritsen of Waukee, Iowa; Kyepok Hjuler of Kentucky; 17 nieces and nephews; 17 great nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
The family will meet with friends Monday evening, November 5, 2018, at 5:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father David Nkrumah on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon, Iowa. Inurnment of the cremains will be in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery northeast of Kimballton, Iowa, at a later date. The honorary casket bearers will be Deb Clemens, Rick Vertz, Jim Casino, Jim Nichols, Terry Burger, Tony Pawlaso and Steven Larsen. The casket bearers will be Alan Robertson, David Robertson, Pete Sorenson, Steve Fini, Randy Zook and David Campbell.
