Mildred Mary Martin, the daughter of John (Jack) L. and Goldie E. Mueller Murray, was born June 2, 1924, at her parents home in Audubon County near Sharon, Iowa, and died May 15, 2010, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 13 days.
Mildred was baptized and confirmed at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon, Iowa. She attended school in Sharon graduating in 1939. She then was employed as a nanny for several years.
On January 18, 1944, she was united in marriage to Gerald J. Martin at St. Marys Catholic Church in Avoca, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. Gerald and Mildred operated farms near Walnut, Iowa, Marne, Iowa and Oakland, Iowa before purchasing their farm southeast of Brayton, Iowa. Mildred was Geralds partner helping him farm and also was a home maker raising their family. They grew row crops, hay, and raised livestock. Later Gerald opened a repair shop and Mildred was his bookkeeper for many years. They retired from farming and moved into Brayton. Mildred enjoyed her home then moved to the Exira Care Center on May 4, 2009.
Mildred was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Exira. She served as President of the Altar and Rosary Society, was on the Church Council, and also served on the building committee. She was a member of the Friendly Neighborhood Club and enjoyed playing on several Brayton card clubs. Mildred was a member of the Brayton Walking Gals and served on the Brayton Development Corporation Board.
Preceding her in death were: her son-in-law: Wayne Janssen; her grandson: Bill Dauma, Jr.; her parents; her brother: Vernon and wife Ruth Murray; her nephews: Stan Matthies and Bill Bauerkemper; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Teresa Martin and Harold Hansen.
Survivors include her husband: Gerald J. Martin of Brayton, Iowa; her children: John (Roger) and wife Barb Martin of Madrid, Iowa, Carla Janssen of Ohatchee, Alabama, and Carol and husband Dean Schwab of Brayton; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one great great grandson; her sisters: Gertrude and husband Fred Matthies and Dorothy and husband Darrell Bauerkemper all of Walnut, Iowa; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Carl Martin and Mary Hansen both of Walnut, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the St Patricks Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa on Wednesday at 1:00 P.M.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Tuesday evening, May 18, 2010, at 6:00 P.M. with a Scripture Service at 7:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
Service:
The Mass of the Christian Burial will be conducted by Father Wayne Gubbels on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Exira, Iowa.
