Myrtle Hughes

Myrtle June Hughes, 81, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.

Myrtle was born on June 24, 1933, in Lorah, Iowa, to Joseph E. and Mary Ella (Frink) Linfor. She grew up in the Atlantic area and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1952. Myrtle was united in marriage to Philip C. (Butch) Hughes on September 18, 1960. To this union, three beloved children were born: Douglas Eugene, Laura Denise, and Jerry Dean.

Myrtle had the privilege of being home with her children during their growing up years, but spent her later working years as a sales clerk at various downtown Atlantic retailers including: Ben Franklin's, The Color Spot, and Schweser's. She loved working downtown because it allowed her to greet old friends and meet many new people.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Mary Linfor; her husband, Philip; and her son, Jerry Dean. Also preceding her in death were her sisters: Georgia, Mary Ann, Inez, Sadie Faye and Marcia; as well as brothers, Larry, John, William (Bill) and David.

Her son, Douglas E. Hughes of Atlantic; her daughter, Laura Karas and husband, Dennie of Massena; grandchildren, Austin and wife Brooke, along with newborn twins Aaron Matthew and Aubrey Grace of Massena, Taylor and wife, Amy of Webster City, and Jenna of Omaha, Nebraska, survive Myrtle. Also to survive her are her siblings, Joseph Linfor Jr. of Greeley, Colorado, Lois Schmitt of Atlantic, Dennis Linfor of Lewis, and Rick Linfor and wife, Kathy of Atlantic; numerous nieces and nephews; and many great friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at the First Church of Christ in Atlantic on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. with family greeting friends from 1:30 - 2:30.

Private family burial of remains will take place at the Atlantic Cemetery at a later date.
