OBITUARY OF NANCY J. SMITH
Nancy Jeanne Smith, the daughter of Robert and Elisabeth Potts Ledwith,, was born June 20, 1951, in Madison, Wisconsin and died March 5, 2008, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 56 years, 8 months, and 15 days.
Nancy was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church. She attended Cedar Rapids, Iowa Community Schools, then graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School with the Class of 1969. She attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Speech Pathology in 1973 and a Masters Degree in 1974.
On August 28, 1971, she was united in marriage to Dennis K. Smith at St. Pauls Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. Following graduation from the University of Northern Iowa they moved to Audubon where Nancy was employed by the Audubon County Superintendent of Schools as a Speech Pathologist. She then worked as a Speech Pathologist for the Heartland Education Agency for one year. Since that time Nancy has operated as a Speech Pathologist in private practice.
Nancy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. She was a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and the Iowa Speech and Hearing Association. She volunteered at Camp Courageous in Monticello, Iowa for several years. She enjoyed being a member of the Country Players where she served on the Board and was involved in all facets of the organization. Nancy also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were: her father-in-law Kenneth Smith; her maternal grandparents: John and Lillian Potts and her paternal grandparents: Fay and Olive Ledwith.
Survivors include her husband Dennis K. Smith of Audubon, IA; her children: Greg and Leah Smith of Cedar Rapids, IA; Lyndi Smith and her fiancé Chris Bieber of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren: Gavin Smith and Ella Smith, both of Cedar Rapids; her parents: Robert and Elisabeth Ledwith of West Bend, WI; her mother-in-law: Bernice Smith of Cedar Rapids; her brother and sister: Jim and Carol Ledwith of Oshkosh, WI; Barbara and Steve Prust of Seoul, South Korea; her brothers in law: David and Sue Smith of Cedar Rapids and Keith Smith of LaQuinta CA; her nieces and nephews: John Prust of Boston, MA, Jenna Prust of Green Bay, WI, Sarah Smith and Brian Smith, both of Cedar Rapids, Kayla Smith and Abagail Smith both of LaQuinta, other relatives and friends
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Kay E. Steddom on Friday, March 7, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon, IA. Interment will be in the Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. Casket bearers will be: Doug Olson, Bill Elgin, John Roberts, Lyle Hansen, Robert Sorensen, and Tom Christensen. The family will meet friends Thursday evening at 7:00 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon. The family prefers memorials to Camp Courageous in Monticello, IA.
