Neil Turner, 88, of Panora, Iowa, and formerly of Adair, Iowa, died Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Neil was born August 6, 1927, on the family farm in Summit Township, Adair County, Iowa, to Roscoe and Verdie (Oaks) Turner. He attended and graduated from the Adair High School in 1945. After graduation, he joined the US Navy as part of the Seabees and served from 1945 until 1946. He returned to the Adair area where he married Patsy Cahail in 1948 and raised their three boys, Rudy, Ron and Rex. Neil farmed north of Adair until 1968 when he went to work for Adair Feed and Grain until his retirement in 1989.
On February 3, 1990, he married Norma (Duff) Scholl in Des Moines, Iowa. Neil and Norma resided in Adair until May 1990 when they moved back to a farm south of Anita. In the summer of 2000 Neil and Norma moved to Atlantic where they lived until moving to Lakeside Village in Panora in 2015.
Neil was a member of the Adair VFW Post 8877, the United Methodist Church and later the First Presbyterian Church in Adair. In high school, Neil played football and baseball and some semi pro baseball after high school. He continued his love of the game by building a baseball diamond on his farm and started his own team for his boys and the local kids called the Middle River Marauders. He enjoyed farming, wood working and watching football and westerns.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Howard; four sisters, Lola in infancy, Helen, Sarah and Rachael; daughter-in-law, Sharon (Wheatley) Turner; and step-daughter, Nancy (Scholl) Hansen.
Neil is survived by his wife, Norma Turner of Panora, IA; three sons, Rudy Turner of San Marcos, CA, Ron (Dee) Turner of Dubuque, IA and Rex (Kathy) Turner of Durango, CO; step-son, Robert (Rebecca) Scholl of Dexter, IA; 5 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lopez of Show Low, AZ.
Visitation with family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Adair, Iowa.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church in Adair, Iowa. Lunch to be served following.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, IA with military honors at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2016.
