Nellie Jean Dustin, the daughter of James and Mary Ellen (Talcott) Allen was born November 27, 1922, in Arion, Iowa, and died Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at her home in Independence, Missouri at the age of 91 years, 11 months, and 15 days.
Jean grew up and attended school in the Arion, Iowa area. On August 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to E. C. (Bill) Dustin. Four daughters Mary Jo, Susan Kay, Carol Sue, and Shirley Jean were born to this union.
Jean worked as a telephone operator in Audubon, Iowa before she became the secretary to the principal at the Audubon High School. She was the secretary there for 25 years. Soon after her husband's death in 1988, she moved to Independence, Missouri.
Jean was an active musician. She sang solos and played piano at weddings, funerals, and churches in the Audubon area. She accompanied music students for music contest solos for many years. After moving to Independence, she gave piano lessons and continued to play for church. She attended the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints while living in Iowa. After moving to Independence she attended the Mount Zion Restoration Branch.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Bill Dustin and her daughters Susan Kay, Carol Sue, and Shirley Jean.
Survivors include her daughter Mary Jo Stayton and husband James of Independence, Missouri; her grandchildren Andrew Stayton and wife Lauren; Mary Reed and husband Nathan; Margaret Fountain and husband Joseph and her great granddaughter Madelyn Grace Reed; her sister Inez McCaslen of Sioux City, Iowa; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014, at 1:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Gray Cemetery west of Gray, Iowa. The family will meet with friends Saturday afternoon from 12:30 P.M. until the time of the service at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. A memorial service will be held in Independence, Missouri at a later date.
