Niels Christian Juel

Niels Christian Juel, the son of Jess N. and Annie Nelson Juel, was born May 17, 1919, at his parents’ home east of Hamlin, Iowa and died March 26, 2014, at the Waterford Assisted Living Facility in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 9 days. Niels was baptized and confirmed at the Hamlin Lutheran Church in Hamlin, Iowa. He attended rural school Greeley Township #3 east of Hamlin and helped operate the family farm. In 1945 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty he was a truck driver and was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned home and continued to farm with his father. On February 14, 1947, he was united in marriage to Norma E. Wahlert at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church Parsonage in Audubon, Iowa. Two children Twila and Merlin were born to this union. They operated the Juel farm in Greeley Township growing row crops and raising livestock. Niels purchased the farm in 1959. He operated the farm until he retired from farming, and they moved into Audubon in May of 1980. Norma died November 22, 1988. Niels worked as a driver for Steve May Construction for many years. On February 19, 1991, he married Wilma Christensen at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church Chapel in Audubon, Iowa. They made their home in Audubon, until they moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to the Walnut Grove Independent Retirement Facility in 2009. Later Niels moved to the Waterford Assisted Living Facility in 2013. Niels was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon and had served on the church council. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion in Audubon. He served as an honor guard for over 65 funerals. He also was a member of the Audubon Lions Club. Niels was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Norma Juel on November 22, 1988; his sisters Marie and husband Harvey Blohm and Amanda and husband Stanley Hansen.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Monday afternoon at 12:00 P.M. until the time of the service at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Doug Opp on Monday, March 31, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa.
