Norma Jean Mcmichael

Norma Jean McMichael, the daughter of Hans and Edith (Hansen) Sorensen, was born July 26, 1932, in rural Guthrie County and died June 3, 2022, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

Norma was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She attended rural schools then graduated from Guthrie Center Community High School with the Class of 1950. Norma did various jobs such as waitressing, housekeeping, and babysitting.

On May 31, 1953, she was united in marriage to Thomas J. McMichael at the Methodist Church in Granger, Iowa. They were blessed with four children Merle, twins Neal and Noel, and Lisa. They farmed in Cameron and Viola Townships. In 1960 they purchased a farm in Viola where Norma helped Thomas grow row crops and raise livestock. Thomas died July 16, 2014, Norma continued to live on the farm until July of 2019 when she moved to the Exira Care Center.

Norma was a member of the Ross Calvary United Methodist Church in Ross, Iowa. She loved growing flowers, cooking, tending to her vegetable garden and canning her produce. Norma enjoyed sewing and looking through magazines. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Preceding her in death was her husband Thomas J. McMichael; her daughter-in-law Debra McMichael; her grand-daughter Stacy Jo McMichael; her parents; her siblings Dale and wife Wilma Sorensen, Arnold and wife Loretta Sorensen, Merlin Sorensen, Jerry Sorensen, and Donna and husband Gary Parker.

Survivors include her children: Merle McMichael, Neal McMichael, Noel McMichael; Lisa and husband John Hansen all of Audubon, Iowa; her grandchildren Erik McMichael and significant other Tami Johannsen, Christy and husband Todd Springston, all of Templeton, Iowa; Pamela and husband Sam Sides of Estherville, Iowa, John Lee Hansen, III and significant other Hilaree Walter of Audubon, Iowa; and Jordan Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her sister-in-law Mary Beth Sorensen of Urbandale, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will meet with friends Tuesday, June 07, 2022 from 12:00 noon until the service at 2:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon. Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Steve Daiker. Interment will be in the Cameron Township Cemetery, north of Ross, Iowa. The casket bearers will be Merle McMichael, Neal McMichael, Noel McMichael; Erik McMichael, Todd Springston, and John Lee Hansen III.
