Norman G. Gundy, 88, of Anita, Iowa, passed away Monday, February 12, 2007, at the Colonial Manor in Anita.
Norman George Gundy was born on February 14, 1918, the son of George and Martha Marie (Felkner) Gundy.
Norman grew up near Walnut, Iowa and attended country schools in that area.
On February 12, 1947, Norman married Betty Ann Erickson at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Atlantic, Iowa.
He and Betty farmed Northwest of Anita and moved into Anita in 1962. He then worked for Pete Kelloway for several years, drove a school bus for nine years and worked for the Cass County Roads Department until his retirement.
Norman was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita. He was supportive of the Boys and Girls Club in Omaha, Nebraska. He was also an advocate against drunk driving and worked with the organization that eventually became M.A.D.D.
Norman loved to walk, watch car races and all-star wrestling. Above all, he was a devoted father, grandfather and husband in taking care of Betty during her illness. He always looked forward to children's and grandchildren's birthdays.
Norman is survived by his daughter, Linda Barber and her husband, Larry of Anita, Iowa, son, Charles Gundy and his wife, Peti of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Diane Madsen and her husband, LeRoy of Atlantic, Iowa, son, Dave Gundy and his wife, Deb of Adair, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Pam Bissell and her husband, Doug of Omaha Nebraska, Dan Barber and his friend, Terri of Wiota, Iowa, Krista Madsen and her friend, Dan of Indianola, Iowa, Eddie Madsen and his wife, Holly of Exira, Iowa, Tisha Jessen and her husband, Rob of Exira, Iowa, Jason Madsen and his wife, Kristi of Exira, Iowa, Nikki Alff and her husband, Jason of Anita, Iowa, Jamie Gundy and his wife, Amber of Adair, Iowa; 3 step-grandchildren, Debbie Hollinrake and her husband, Francis of Adair, Iowa, Brad Barber and his wife, Terri of Anita, Iowa, and Bobbi Jo Victor and her significant other, Tom of Webster City, Iowa; as well as six great-great grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Martha; his first wife Delores and their son, Timothy, who were killed in a train accident; and his second wife, Betty Gundy, who died on December 11, 1996; and Betty's parents, Charles and Lorretta Erickson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 16, 2007, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita, Iowa.
Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2007, with the family present to greet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita. A scriptural prayer service will be held prior to family visitation at 6:00 p.m.
Burial will be in the Atlantic Catholic Cemetery, Atlantic, Iowa, with a luncheon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita following the burial.
