Opal Bishop

Opal Lenore Smith was born April 16, 1918, in Cass County, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Stone) Smith and passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center in Atlantic, Iowa.

She spent her early years on a farm near Anita. She graduated from the Anita High School and attended Normal Training. Opal taught county school from 1935 to 1942. On October 24, 1942, Opal married Carl Bishop in Maryville, Missouri. The couple lived on a farm near Anita, Massena and Wiota. In 1988, they sold the farm and moved to Atlantic.

Opal was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Atlantic and the Cass County Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed raising a garden, canning and freezing the produce she raised. Opal did a great deal of sewing for her family and from 1989 to 2003, she did alterations and mending for the Atlantic Police Department, as well as the community of Atlantic. She crocheted many afghans, some for herself, and others were given as gifts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Bishop; her parents, Frank and Emma Smith; her sister, Mildred Kuehn; and her daughter-in-law, Carole Bishop.

Opal is survived by her son, Larry (Rebecca) Bishop of Davenport, IA; her daughter, Barbara (Richard) Hrabak of Chelsea, IA; her grandchildren, Jason (Stacey) Hrabak, Aaron (Sherry) Hrabak, Jeffery Hrabak, Kristen (Don) Hastings, Eileen Bishop, Laurien Bishop and Melissa Hrabak; two great-grandsons; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church in Atlantic, Iowa, with burial to follow in Southlawn Memory Gardens, south of Atlantic.
