Paul Donald Schaaf was born June 7, 1947, the son of Donald and Marcella Jeanette (Eilts) Schaaf in Atlantic, Iowa, and passed away Monday, February 1, 2010, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.
He was raised on the family farm south of Wiota, attending country school, Wiota School and graduating from the Anita High School. Paul worked with his father, Don on the family farm for most of his life.
On February 9, 1969, he was married to Tamara Ann Taylor in Atlantic, Iowa. In 1985, the family moved into Wiota. Tamara passed away in 1986. On December 22, 1989, Paul was married to Shelley Marie Mitchell in Omaha, Nebraska. Paul and Shelley moved to Anita in 2001.
Paul continued farming until 1995. At that time he was employed by Schildberg Construction Company as a truck driver. He retired in September of 2009, when his health would no longer allow him to work.
He will be remembered as a great husband, father, brother, son and papa. With Paul, what you saw is what you got. He was a man of few words, and when he gave you his word, it could be considered as good as done.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Marcella Schaaf; his wife, Tammy; his daughter, Kimberly, in infancy; his uncle, Ron Schaaf and his nephew, Travis Glynn.
Paul is survived by his wife, Shelley; his son, Jeff Schaaf and his friend, Brenda Koch of Wiota, Iowa; his daughter, Jill Hall and her husband, Jim of Bennington, Nebraska; his grandchildren, Brianne and Bryce Schaaf, and Nate and Seth Scrum; his sisters, Marsha Cobb and her husband, Don of Wood River, Illinois, and Peg Glynn and her husband, Jim of Wiota; his aunt, Irma Schaaf of Atlantic, Iowa; his nieces and nephews, Julie Rollins and her husband, Rich, Doug Cob, Julie Chapman, Kathy Taylor, Amy Daugherty and her husband, Dennis, Scott Glynn and his wife, Anne, and Shelly Johnson and her husband, Adam; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita, Iowa. Visitation with family present will be from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the funeral, also at the funeral home.
A luncheon will be held at the Anita Community Center after the funeral service.
Memorials may be made to the Anita or Wiota Volunteer Fire Departments.
