Raleann "Nina" Irene Schnell - Bertelsen

     RaLeann Irene Schnell-Bertelsen, the daughter of Verlyn and Fredrica Jean (Richardson) Schnell, was born July 1, 1973, in Portland, Oregon and died December 31, 2023, at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 50 years, 5 months, and 30 days.

     RaLeann attended school in the Osborne/Wallace Idaho School District. She went to Osborne grade school and Wallace High School, graduating with the High School Class of 1991. RaLeann attended College for a short time, then on April 13, 1992, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During her tour of duty, she was stationed in California and served with the SeeBees as a diesel mechanic. She was honorably discharged June 21, 1995. RaLeann first moved to Texas and through out her life she was employed at various jobs in a number of states until she moved to Audubon, Iowa in 2017.

     On September 17, 2019, she was united in marriage to Gary Bertelsen at the Justice of the Peace in Audubon. RaLeann was employed at Chuck’s Bargain Barn, Foodland, and Bohlmann’s can redemption. Later she helped Gary doing lawn care and odd jobs.

     RaLeann was an avid reader, loved to play word games and cards. She enjoyed swimming and hiking. RaLeann enjoyed talking to people and never knew a stranger.

     Preceding her in death was her father Verlyn Schnell and her grandparents.

     Survivors include her husband Gary Bertelsen of Audubon, Iowa; her mother Rica Jean and husband Ray Hansen in Idaho; her brother Verlyn Richardson of Audubon, Iowa; her half-brother Ray Hansen in Idaho; and her step brothers Mark Hansen of Nevada and Forrest Hansen in Idaho; and her childhood friend Dean Sniffles.

     The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Friday afternoon, January 12, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa. The family will greet friends Friday Afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon. Inurnment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon at a later date.
