Reverend Samuel John Hahn, the son of Henry and Carrie (Streyfeller) Hahn was born September 22, 1930, in Le Mars, Iowa and died October 10, 2015, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 85 years and 18 days.
Samuel was baptized at the Perry Creek Evangelical Church in Merrill, Iowa and confirmed at the Merrill-Melbourne Evangelical Church near Merrill. He attended rural schools then graduated from the Hinton High School with the Class of 1949. Samuel studied at Westmar College in Le Mars graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1953. He then attended Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary graduating in 1956. He accepted a call at Buffalo and Lincoln Churches near Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
On January 25, 1957, he was united in marriage to Juanita Lou Carpenter at the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church in Le Mars, Iowa. They were blessed with three children Eunice, Jonathan, and Deborah. They served congregations in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sharon Center north of Kalona, Iowa, Dumont, Iowa, Gowrie, Iowa, West Branch, Iowa, Hampton, Iowa and later moved to Iowa City, Iowa where they retired. During retirement he served the United Methodist Church in Moscow, Iowa and also was a Chaplain at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City as well as the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In June of 2011 they moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa. Juanita died June 20, 2014.
Samuel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. Over the years he had been a member of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the Lions Club. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, riding his bicycle, and gardening. He was a naturalist at heart and ran a church day camp for young children to learn about nature. Samuel was a published author writing “Learning from the Lizard” and “Stories Told Under the Sycamore Tree” along with published poetry he wrote with his Parkinson’s support group.
Samuel was preceded in death by his wife Juanita Lou Hahn; his parents; and his brothers-in-law Rev. Robert Patenaude and Arnold Ubben.
Survivors include his children Eunice and husband Philip Mennenoh of Audubon; Jonathan and wife Laurie Hahn of Castle Rock, Colorado; Deborah and husband Moncef Hadiji of Rockledge, Florida; his grandchildren: Benjamin and wife Lauren Hahn of Houston, Texas; Matthew Hahn of Houston, Texas; Adam Hadiji of Orlando, Florida; his great grandsons Carter Hahn and Colton Hahn both of Houston, Texas; his sister Mary and husband Reverend Armin Vogt of Lincoln, Nebraska; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Paul and wife Faye Carpenter of Moss Point, Mississippi; Rosella Patenaude of Hays Kansas; Ruth Ubben of Gallatin, Tennessee; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Kathy Kluis on Thursday, October 15, 2015, at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. Interment will be in the Sharon Center Cemetery north of Kalona, Iowa at 3:30 P.M. The casket bearers will be Jon Hahn, Ben Hahn, Matt Hahn, Phil Mennenoh, Moncef Hadiji, and Paul Carpenter. The family will meet with friends on Wednesday evening October 14, 2015, at 6:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa.
