Richard H. Carney, 92, of Adair, Iowa, died Monday, May 23, 2016, at The New Homestead in Guthrie Center, Iowa.
Richard was born August 27, 1923, on the family farm in Adair County, Iowa, to Lewis Oscar and Wylma (Heaton) Carney. He attended and graduated from the Adair High School in 1941. Richard attended Iowa State University until he was drafted into the US Army in 1942. He served in the European Theater during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to the Adair area where he farmed west of Adair until his retirement.
He married Phyllis Wegner August 17, 1949, at Phyllis' parent's home in Adair. Richard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Adair, VFW Post 8877, the American Legion, Guthrie County Cattleman's Association and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed farming, raising cattle, red tractors, going to toy tractor shows and collecting toy tractors, wintering in Arizona, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan Lee; and a son, David George in infancy; a brother, Calvin Carney; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Carney.
Richard is survived by his wife, Phyllis Carney of Adair, IA; a daughter, Barb (Terry) Morris of Primghar, IA; a son, Charles (Vickie) Carney of Adair, IA; grandchildren, Andrew (Audra) Morris of Leawood, KS, Ryan (Katie) Morris of Waukee, IA, Molly (Matt) Conlon of Spencer, IA, Tyler (Jessica) Carney of Adair, IA, Brady (Jenna) Carney of Dallas Center, IA, Blair (Erin) Carney of Adair, IA, Jamie (Mike) Moellers of Ankeny, IA and Jeremy Christofferson of Denver, CO; fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Canfield of West Des Moines, IA; and a sister-in-law, Pat Carney of Adair, IA.
Visitation with family will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 26, 2016, at Hockenberry Family Care in Adair, Iowa.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 27, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church in Adair, Iowa.
Burial will be in Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair, IA with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to family's wishes is preferred.
