Richard Earl Weeks, the son of Earl and Susan (Gerber) Weeks, was born December 28, 1921, in Audubon, Iowa and died September 6, 2010, at the Friendship Home in Audubon at the age of 88 days, 8 months, and 8 days.
Richard attended rural school in Audubon County and then attended the Viola Center Consolidated School through the 11th grade. Prior to marriage he drove truck for Hormel.
On August 21, 1946, Richard was united in marriage to Edna Jane Schamel at the Catholic Church in Lohrville, Iowa. Six children were born to this union. The couple farmed in the Viola area, and later Richard worked as a farm laborer for William Klocke. They moved into Audubon in 1968 and Richard worked at Franck Brothers until 1986. He then was employed at Audubon Super Valu for a short time before retiring.
Richard was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed nature, growing his roses, watching the birds, and squirrels from the kitchen table window, gardening, and fishing. He also enjoyed card clubs, bingo, and going on the tour bus to casinos.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers: Harold, Ronald and Maurice Weeks; his sister, Edra Broich; three sisters-in-law: Carole Weeks, Donna Weeks, and Lois Garrett; four brothers-in-law: Maurice Hoffman, Donnie Schamel, Frank Schamel, and Lloyd Garrett; and his mother-in-law and father-in law: Harry and Myrtle Schamel.
Survivors include his wife Edna of Audubon; his six children: Janice Staiert and husband Ronald of Walnut, Iowa, Thomas Weeks and wife KJ of Las Vegas, Nevada, Frances Huffman and husband Terry of Audubon, Johnathan Weeks and wife Sharen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, William Weeks and fiance Karen Segeeof Orlando, Florida, and James Weeks and wife Kim of Omaha, Nebraska; 17grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; his sister Twilla Hoffman of Carroll, Iowa; two brothers: Cleo Weeks and wife Shirley of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dale Weeks and wife Roberta of Seymour, Iowa; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Phyllis Weeks of Glidden, Iowa, Robert Broich of Carroll, Danny Schamel and wife Kathryn of Lohrville, Iowa, Ila Rossmanith of Lake City, Iowa, Bonnie Schamel of Williams, Iowa, and Linda Schamel of Yucca Valley, California; nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and great-great nieces and great-great nephews, other relatives and friends.
The honorary casket bearers will be Dale Weeks, Cleo Weeks, and William P. Roth. The casket bearers will be his grandsons Richard Staiert, Jason Weeks, Josh Weeks, Michael Staiert, Jeffrey Weeks, Christofer Weeks, Jeremy Weeks, Jamie Weeks, and Matthew Staiert.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in St. Patricks Catholic Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Thursday evening September 9, 2010, at 6:00 with a Rosary at 7:00 at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Wayne Gubbels on Friday, September 10, 2010, at 1:30 P.M. at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Audubon.
