Richard Franklin Petersen, the son of Franklin and Cynthia Nelson Petersen, was born April 7, 1947, in Atlantic, Iowa and died April 10, 2009, at St. Anthonys Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa at the age of 62 years and 3 days.\r\n
Richard was baptized at St. Johns Lutheran Church west of Exira, Iowa and confirmed at the Exira Lutheran Church. He attended Exira Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1965. He worked for other farmers in the area for a short time. In 1966 Richard was inducted into the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty he served in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1969 and returned to Exira and was employed by the International Dealership in Audubon.\r\n
On November 29, 1969, he was united in marriage to Linda Schnackel at the Hancock Methodist Church in Hancock, Iowa. They rented a farm near Coon Rapids, Iowa which they operated until 1979. They then moved to Richards parents farm east of Exira. He operated a crop and livestock farm. One of his greatest enjoyments was raising cattle. Along with farming Richard worked for Exira Farm Supply for a short time, then has been employed at West Central Co-op in Adair, Iowa as an operational specialist for almost 20 years.\r\n
Richard was a member of the Exira Lutheran Church. He had been a member of the Church Council and a member of the Usher Team. He was a member of Ballou Post No. 332, American Legion in Exira. Next to his family one of his greatest loves was farming.\r\n
Preceding him in death were his father Franklin Petersen; his grandmother Albena Nelson; and his uncle John Nelson.\r\n
Survivors include his wife Linda Petersen of Exira, IA; his children: Michael and wife Pam Petersen of Corwith, IA and Amy Petersen and her fiance James Klemish of Adair, IA; his grandsons: Ryan and wife Karen White of Spencer, IA; Jonathon White and Robert E. White, Jr. both of Corwith; his great-granddaughter Isabella White of Spencer; his mother Cynthia Petersen of Exira; his sisters: Diane and husband Duane Schrader of Exira; Linda and husband Rick Wheatley of Omaha, NE; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Wayne and wife Lee Schnackel of Durham, North Carolina; John and wife Lyla Schnackel of Ft. Collins, CO; Philip Schnackel of Council Bluffs, IA; Marjorie and husband Terry Frisbie of Walnut, IA; Dick and wife Lisa Schnackel of Council Bluffs; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Albert and Phyllis Schnackel of Atlantic, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery west of Exira.

Visitation:
The family will meet friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Kathy Wicks on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at 10:30 A.M. at Exira Lutheran Church.
