Richard McMurphy, 81, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa.
Richard McMurphy was born May 16, 1927, in Adair, Iowa, the son of Walter and Tillie (Hofmeister) McMurphy. He grew up in Adair County where he attended rural schools and helped on the family farm.
Rich was a member of the U.S. Marines serving in Japan at the end of WWII. He then worked in construction until he saw the tornado of 1953 that destroyed their farm, killing his mother and severely injuring his father. After helping rebuild their home, he cared for his father. He spent the remainder of his working life as a farmer and assisting his brother-in-law, Bruce Schwenneker, doing jobs around Adair to keep the town beautiful.
Rich enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially playing cards with them in Anita and Adair. His last years were spent in the Care Centers in Adair and Stuart, Iowa.
Survivors include his sister Loretta Siedelmann of Henderson, Kentucky; five nieces and nephews; grandnieces and nephews; cousins; and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Tillie McMurphy; his sister and her husband, Ida and Bruce Schwenneker; his brother and his wife, Bob and Betty McMurphy; his brother-in-law, Wayne Siedelmann; and his niece, Mary Peterson.
The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Adair, Iowa. Family will be present to greet guests two hours prior to the funeral service, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
