Richard Grant Richter was born June 6, 1925, the son of Ralph William and Ruth Rae (Turner) Richter near Anita, Iowa, and passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa.
He was a life time Cass County resident, graduating from the Anita High School in 1942. Richard was the valedictorian of his class and received a scholarship to a business school in Grand Island, Nebraska. He attended college for one year, but his love for farming and the land brought him home again. Richard enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1944 to 1946. After his service, he again returned to the farm. On June 15, 1948, Richard was married to Frances Earl at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wiota.
He was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita and currently a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Richard served the community and his church in several positions, including as a Township Trustee, Fair Board member, Farm Bureau member, a member of the Lions Club, President of the Anita School Board, Trustee of St. Mary's in Anita and Parish Council President.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Ruth Richter.
Surviving Richard is his wife, Frances Richter of Wiota, IA; his children, Timothy (Josi) Richter of Coupeville, WA, Allyn Ann (Larry) Krug of Long Grove, IA, Nick (Charlet) Richter of Omaha, NE, Cindy Richter of Bellevue, NE and Colette (Keith) Blake of Eldridge, IA; his grandchildren, Ana Richter of Billings, MT, Katti (Chris) Parker of Bettendorf, IA, Michaela Krug of Omaha, NE, Taryn (Ryan) Shropshire of Olathe, KS, Samuel and Damian Richter of Omaha, NE, Kylie Richter of Denver, CO and Caroline Blake of Eldridge, IA; one great-grandson, Hunter Parker of Bettendorf, IA; his sisters, Gae (Dwight) Kullbom of Elkhorn, NE and Carol Kenyon of Shenandoah, IA.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family prefers a mass be offered in lieu of flowers.
There will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 5:30 p.m., with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2012, at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Atlantic.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 17, 2012, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic.
Burial will be in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.
