Richard Sherman

Richard L. Sherman, 59, of Casey, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008, at Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa.

Richard Lloyd Sherman was born January 28, 1949, in Creston, Iowa, the son of Lloyd George and Lorna Ima (Weber) Sherman. He grew up on his parents' farm outside of Casey and continued to live in the Casey area his entire life. Dick attended Casey schools, graduating from Adair-Casey High School in 1967.
He was previously married to Pamela Sue Livingston. They raised Ruthi, Colby and Hudson.

He was employed at American Can in Des Moines, Iowa, for over forty years. Dick continued to farm outside of Adair until a few years ago.

Dick was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa.

Dick was a down to earth person; he was reliable, hard working and friendly. He never knew a stranger, only a friend he had yet to meet and certainly never had an enemy. He was admired by his family and friends for his strong work ethic, unbeatable honesty and the wealth of knowledge that he had acquired over his lifetime. If he didn't know the answer to a question, he would know where to find it. Dick was always there for anyone in need, whether it was fixing a motor or a meal for his family. He loved cooking and recipes, taking great pride in the home grown potatoes, tomatoes, asparagus and flowers from his garden. Dick enjoyed drag and mud racing, and was a member of the National Hot Rod Association. Most of all, he loved his family and cherished the time he was able to spend fishing with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Ruthi Wheatley and her husband, Reggie of Adair, Iowa; his sons, Colby Sherman of Casey, Iowa, and Hudson Sherman and his wife, Bobbie Jo of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren, Jacob and Grant Sherman of Des Moines, Iowa, Emmitt, Mallory, Jenna, and Nova Wheatley of Adair, Iowa; his sisters, Janet Sams and her husband, Wade of Stuart, Iowa, and Betty Berlau and her husband, Dave of Ankeny, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Karen Harrison of Des Moines, Iowa, Amy Warner of Ankeny, Iowa, Rick Warner of Panora, Iowa, Casey Berlau and his wife, Jodi of Elk Horn, Iowa, Emily Stelling and her husband, Marc of Rockwell City, Iowa, and Natalie Meier and her husband, Ryan of Ankeny, Iowa; and numerous other family and friends.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Lorna Sherman and his grandparents, William and Amelia Weber of Greenfield, and George and Rissie Sherman of Casey.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa.

Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Casey, Iowa.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair, Iowa.
