Richard Viether

December 24, 1946 — June 22, 2014

Richard Eugene Viether was born December 24, 1946, the son of Kenneth Henry and Viola Christina (Andersen) Viether and passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014, at his home in Clearfield, Iowa.

He grew up and lived most of his life in Marne, Iowa. During high school, Richard worked at the Marne Gas Station. He graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1965. On August 15, 1970, Richard married Gail Marie Manz. After Richard returned from his service in the United States Air Force, the couple made their home in Marne. He was employed at John Deere, Walnut Grove and Cargill. He later worked part time at Oathoudt Farm Supply.

Richard was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic where he served as an usher. He was a 30 year member of the Marne Fire Department and served as Fire Chief. Richard also served as Mayor of Marne and was a member of the Marne City Council. He helped with the mowing in the Brighton Township Cemetery and took great pride in helping to display the flags for Memorial Day each year.
Richard enjoyed collecting toy tractors and antique tools. He was a fan of NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Richard's favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gail Viether, and his parents, Kenneth and Viola Viether.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Melissa (Kevin) Eggert of Clearfield, IA and Melinda (Brent) Smith of DeSoto, IA; his grandchildren, Kassie, Kory and Aiden Eggert of Clearfield, IA and Taylor Smith of DeSoto, IA; his brothers, Dennis (Connie) Viether of Stanberry, MO, Larry (Jana) Viether and Dale Viether all of Clarinda, IA; his sisters-in-law, Pearl (Jim) Hulsebus of Rochester, MN and Mary (Jerry) Jensen of Atlantic, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 27, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, with burial to follow in the Brighton Township Cemetery, north of Marne.

Memorials may be made to the Marne Fire Department.
