Robert D. Christoffersen

Robert Donald Christoffersen, the son of C. Albert and Esther Mortensen Christoffersen, was born February 3, 1923, at his parents home in Shelby County near Poplar, Iowa and died July 4, 2009, at his home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 1 day.
Robert was baptized as an infant at the Poplar Church in Audubon County. Later Robert and Mardell were baptized by immersion at the Audubon Church of Christ. Bob attended rural school graduating from the Defiance High School with the Class of 1940. He helped operate the family farm. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. During his tour of duty he was a rear gunner on a Curtis Hell Diver SB2C. He served on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Intrepid and the U.S.S. Midway, during the war of the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged with medals of commendation. Upon returning from the war, he owned and operated a restaurant on Main Street in Audubon. Then sold investments, real estate, and insurance for several years.
On August 1, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mardell Lauridsen at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon. Later, with his father, they owned and operated the Massey-Harris Implement Dealership in Audubon. Bob and Mardell then moved to Centerville, Iowa where they operated a farm for eight years. During this time, Bob, lobbied in Washington, D.C., for flood control, resulting in the building of Lake Rathburn to control the Chariton River System. The family later lived in Corydon, Iowa and Grinnell, Iowa. Upon returning to Audubon, Bob was appointed as the Audubon County Auditor. After that he served as the Audubon City Clerk for a short time. Bob then worked as a Field Auditor for the Iowa State Auditors office until he retired. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing and donated many golf balls to the Audubon High School golf program. He spent time transporting cars for Christiansen Motors and enjoyed having coffee with friends. He also liked skeet and trap shooting.
Bob was a member of the Audubon Church of Christ. He was a lifetime member of the Dale Christensen Post No. 4119, Audubon V.F. W. and a member of the Audubon Post No. 120, American Legion.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his parents-in-law Nels and Augusta Lauridsen; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Donald and Velma Lauridsen, Roland and Caroline Lauridsen; Dallas and Betty Lauridsen; Darrell Lauridsen and his nephew Dale Christoffersen.
Survivors include his wife Mardell Christoffersen of Audubon, IA; his children: Cheryl and husband Rick Morris of Glidden, IA and Brad and wife Renae Christoffersen; his grandchildren: Clay Morris of Glidden; Leah Morris of Lake View, IA; Jacob Christoffersen of Omaha, NE; and Rachel Christoffersen of Carroll, IA; his great-granddaughter Bryli Blunk of Lake View; his brother Lyle and wife Dorothy Christoffersen of Audubon; his sister-in-law: Ruth Lauridsen of Carroll; Lori Christoffersen of Carroll; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Arlington heights Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa

Visitation:
Friends may call at their convenience Monday, July 6, 2009from 8:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. and Tuesday, July 7, from 8:00 A.M. until noon.

Service:
A private family service will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock and Pastor Willie Tryon at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, Iowa
