Robert J. Fagan, 84, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.
Robert Joseph Fagan was born on November 3, 1923, in Adair County, Iowa, the son of Marcus and Ruth (Dolan) Fagan.
He grew up in Adair and graduated from Adair High School in 1940. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army, and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. After being honorably discharged he returned to Adair.
On April 14, 1951, he was united in marriage to Bertha Burg at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Casey, Iowa. He and Bertha lived on a farm south of Adair, where he farmed.
Robert was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Adair, where he served on the parish council and was also the organist for almost 50 years. He also served on the election board for many years.
He enjoyed gardening, flowers, black angus cows and his cats. Robert loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Robert is survived by his wife, Bertha, of Adair; son, John Fagan and his wife, Kathy of Adair, Iowa; daughters, Debbie Waterbury and her husband, Mike of Atlantic, Iowa, and Ann Culver and her husband, Daryl of Atlantic, Iowa; grandchildren, Matt Fagan and his wife, Monica of Adair, Iowa, Dennis Culver of Ames, Iowa, Tom and Josie Waterbury of Lincoln, Nebraska, Bethany Kintigh and her husband, Nick of Greenfield, Iowa, Jenny Armstrong and her husband, Tyson of Polk City, Iowa, Jill Ackelson and her husband, Jake of Des Moines, Iowa, Katie Fagan of Omaha, Nebraska, and Darci Culver of Robbinsdale, Minnesota; great grandchildren, Paisley and Dax Kintigh, Carley and Belle Fagan, and Riley Ackelson; sister, Phyllis O'Brien and her husband, Wayne of Adair, Iowa; brothers, Phillip Fagan and his wife, Wilma of Adair, Iowa and Ambrose Fagan of Alleman, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Fagan of Adair, Iowa, and Mary Ann Hart and her husband, Joe of Altoona, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus and Ruth Fagan; brother, Eugene Fagan; and brother-in-law, Clair Richter.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2007, at St. John's Catholic Church in Adair.
Viewing will start at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 20, 2007, with family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at Hockenberry-Mullen Funeral Home in Adair.
Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Adair. Following the committal service the family invites you to join them for a luncheon in the church parish hall.
