Rodney Gene Carlson was born July 28, 1956, the son of Emery Wilmar and Maxine Lenora (Petersen) Carlson in Harlan, Iowa, and passed away Monday, December 5, 2011, at Atlantic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Atlantic, Iowa.

Rodney grew up in Elk Horn, Iowa, and attended the Elk Horn-Kimballton schools. He was married to Marcia Petersen on November 20, 1976, in Audubon, Iowa. The couple moved to Atlantic in 1979. He was employed at various construction jobs, at a campground and park in Colorado, doing masonry work, and most recently in maintenance at the Wings of America truck stop in Avoca.

Rodney loved music, motorcycles, the Internet and his dogs. He was a Superman fan and enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and hiking.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emery and Maxine Carlson; his father-in-law, Virgil Petersen; and his brother-in-law, Ed Larson.

Surviving Rodney are his wife, Marcia Carlson of Atlantic, IA; his sons, Brian (Jeanette Carr) Carlson of Elk Horn, IA and Adam (Nicole Clark) Carlson of Atlantic, IA; his grandchildren, Anthony (Martha) Carlson and Brandon Carlson, all of Claremont, North Carolina; his great-grandchildren, Alexander and Brayden Carlson of Claremont, North Carolina; his sister, Marion (Bruce) Bailey of Lake Panorama, IA; his mother-in-law, Delores Petersen of Audubon, IA; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherie Parker of Atlantic, IA, Gary (Kim) Petersen of Atlantic, IA and Cindy (Bryan Ingerslav) Larsen of Exira, IA; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2011, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, with lunch and a time for visiting in Hockenberry's community room following the service.
