Roger Lee Rubel was born December 12, 1939, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Russell William and Wilma Elaine (Behler) Rubel and passed away January 31, 2012, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa, after a long, hard fought battle with Diabetes.
He grew up in Greely Township, Audubon County, Iowa, where he attended grade school at Greeley #3 Country School and the Audubon Community Schools, receiving his GED while in the service.
He was baptized January 1, 1950, and confirmed April 10, 1952, at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon.
Roger served in the U.S. Marine Corps from January 10, 1958, until being honorably discharged on January 9, 1961. Roger was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, and in Hawaii. Roger earned the Good Conduct Medal twice during his time of service.
On May 1, 1959, Roger married Barbara Buckner at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. Following his discharge from the Marines, the couple lived in Omaha where Roger worked four years as a patrolman for the Omaha Police Department. Roger married Sherry Schinkel and during this marriage the couple adopted two children, Shawna and Shane. He also married Mary Pierce.
He then worked as a car salesman for the next 48 years. His second marriage to Sherry Schinkle included the adoption of two children, Shawna and Shane.
In his spare time, Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Otto and Sophie Rubel and Forrest and Lillian McFadden, and his father, Russell Rubel.
Roger is survived by his mother, Wilma Rubel of Audubon; his brother, Darrell Rubel and his wife, Paula of Hailey, Idaho, and their children, Laura, of Winona, Minnesota and Sharla of Fort Collins, Colorado; other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held Friday, February 3, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hockenberry-England Funeral Home in Audubon. The family will not be present.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon.
Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon.
Hockenberry-England Funeral and Cremation Services in Audubon are in charge of the arrangements.
