Ronald "Spike" Simon, 72, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.
He was born February 26, 1942, to Harold and Mardelle (Barnholdt) Simon in Cumberland, Iowa. Ron grew up in Anita and has spent his whole life in the Anita and Atlantic area. He graduated from Anita High School with the class of 1960. He was employed at Schueman Transfer in Oakland, Iowa, for over 25 years.
Ronald joined the United States Air Force on September 13, 1960, and was honorably discharged on September 9, 1964, during which time he served in Germany. He was a member of the VFW and the Atlantic Elks Lodge #445.
He enjoyed bowling, golfing, men's softball, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Ron was a Nebraska and Green Bay Packers football fan, and in his free time enjoyed going to the casino and playing "bump" with his family.
Ronald is survived by his son, Chris (Kris) Simon of Falls City, NE; his daughter, Melissa Simon (fiancé Rob Valdivia) of Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren, Drew Simon, Caden Simon and Carson Simon; his sisters, Bette McCann and Janel Will both of Wiota, IA, and Janiece (Denney) Anderson of Visalia, CA; his brothers, Steve Simon of Huntington Beach, CA and Rick (Shellee) Simon of Los Alamitos, CA; his sister-in-law, Jorene Simon of Aurora, CO; his aunt, Ruby Watkins of Aurora, CO; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mardelle Simon; brother, Gary Simon; brother-in-law, Bud McCann; sister-in-law, Sam Simon; and nephew, Jay Marnin.
Visitation with family will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa. A luncheon will be served in the community room at Hockenberry Family Care following the visitation.
Interment of ashes will be held at a later date in the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
