Roy Newberg

September 4, 1932 — February 13, 2014

Roy Allen Newberg, 81, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa.

He was born September 4, 1932, in Villisca, Iowa, the son of Alick and Flossie (Thurber) Newberg. He was raised in the Siola, Iowa, area. Roy was united in marriage to Ruth Ackerman on June 9, 1951, at the Methodist Church in Clarinda, Iowa. He was inducted into the United States Army on November 12, 1952. Roy served two years during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in France and Germany. Upon his return to the United States he served in the Army reserves until October 31, 1963. Roy and Ruth moved to Wichita, Kansas, for about a year, where Roy worked for Boeing Aircraft Company. Then they moved to the Massena, Iowa, area for a short period where he worked for some area farmers. Their last move was to Atlantic, where they settled.

While in Atlantic, Roy worked for Bells Highway Hatchery and a few other businesses in the area. He then owned and operated Skelly's for many years. He later went to work for MoorMan's Manufacturing and retired there as the assistant manager. Roy was a member of the Elk's Lodge in Atlantic, the Lion's Club and the American Legion.

There was nothing Roy couldn't fix or make himself. He was always fixing, modifying or improving everything he bought. He purchased an old Ford tractor and restored it so he could drive it tractor rides. Roy was always helping or doing something for his neighbors and friends. He loved gardening, but most of all he treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with them. His greatest love of all was his wife, Ruth, of 62 years.

Roy is survived by his wife, Ruth Newberg of Atlantic, IA; his children, Pat (Denise) Newberg of Oakland, IA and Sheila (Kendal) Kunze of Lewis, IA; his grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Newberg of Colorado Springs, CO., Jodi (Chris) Eakin of Omaha, NE, Brett (Brandie) Newberg of Norwalk, IA, Elizabeth (J.C.) Wyman of Griswold, IA, Zach (Laura) Newberg of Colorado Springs, CO, Jordan (Olivia) Newberg of Atlantic and Nick Newberg of Noblesville, IN; 20 great-grandchildren; his twin brother, Ray (Charlotte) Newberg of Clarinda, IA; his sister, Dorothy Briggs of Ohio; brother-in-law, Laverne (Karen) Ackerman of Atlantic; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
