Roy Samuel Lawson, the son of Samuel and Hazel Anderson Lawson, was born May 13, 1929, at his parents home in Cameron Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died July 24, 2008, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 79 years, 2 months, and 11 days.
Sam was baptized and confirmed at the Gray Methodist Church in Gray, Iowa. He attended Gray Consolidated School, graduating with the High School Class of 1947. He then was employed as a truck driver for H. P. Jorgensen. On September 5, 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty he served in Germany and the Southern United States. He was honorably discharged on March 10, 1953, and returned to the Audubon area and continued as a truck driver.
On July 11, 1954, he was united in marriage to Lois Nissen at the Gray Methodist Church. Sam continued truck driving, but also farmed east of Ross, Iowa for 13 years. They moved into Audubon and Sam drove truck for Walnut Grove, Roberts Transfer, and A. & G. Farm Service until he semi-retired. Since that time he had worked for WinField Solutions until he was forced to retire due to illness.
Sam was a member of Dale Christensen Post No. 4119, V.F.W. and a member of American Legion Post No. 120, Audubon, IA. Sam helped to put the flags up around the community and the cemetery. He also was a volunteer driver transporting veterans to Doctors appointments at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister Edith and Reuben Stoberl; his sister-in-law Ruth Heiken; his brothers-in-law George Campbell and Allie Tigges.
Survivors include his wife Lois Lawson of Audubon, IA; his children: Kurt and Terri Lawson of Carroll, IA and Lana Brown of Allen, TX; his grandchildren: Tera Lawson of Ames, IA; Chad Lawson of Mission, KS; Jacob Lawson of Carroll, IA; Heidi and Hunter Kessell of McKinney, TX; his great-granddaughter Haley Kessell of McKinney, TX; his sisters: Grace Campbell of Audubon and Wanda Tigges of Carroll; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: David and Pat Nissen of Westminster, SC and Vickie and David Featherstone of Johnston, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Cemetery:
Inurnment will be in the Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Monday from 1:00 P.M. until time of service at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Memorial services will be conducted by Pastor Christopher Martin on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
