Ruby Scholl

May 17, 1921 — April 26, 2010

Ruby Kristine Scholl, long-time resident of Anita, IA passed away peacefully Monday, April 26, 2010, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA.

Born to Danish immigrants, George and Laura Andersen on May 17, 1921, on their farm near Brayton, IA; Ruby started country school speaking only Danish. As she learned the English language at school she taught her parents and brothers at home to speak it also.

Ruby graduated from Atlantic High School in 1940 and soon after left her family to work with her friend, classmate and future sister-in-law Ruth (McDermott) Andersen, as a civil servant for a wealthy family in Omaha, NE. She attributed her accomplished cooking and baking skills to this work experience. It was around this time she met a "farm boy" from Anita, IA, Edwin L. Scholl. Their courtship was cut short; however, when Ed was called to service for three years following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. While Ed was away, Ruby worked for Voss Manufacturing in Atlantic; and upon his return from the military, they were married on Oct. 20, 1946. They farmed southeast of Anita. They were blessed with two children, Carolyn and Richard.

On Sept. 22, 1960, Ruby's life as a dedicated farm wife came to a tragic end when Ed was killed in a farming accident. Left to raise her children (ages 13 & 10) on her own, she took a couple of secretarial positions. She worked for almost 30 years with Brocker, Karns & Karns Ins. (formerly Town & Country Ins.) in Anita.

Ruby was a long-time member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita where she served on various committees and participated in numerous church functions over the years. She really enjoyed the church's quilting group in her later years. She was also an active member of the Anita American Legion Women's Auxiliary, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Women's Federated Club for many years.

She enjoyed reading, quilting, bird feeding/watching, tracking the weather, cooking, baking and most of all spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; daughter, Carolyn; brothers, Clarence, Arlo and Elvin (Ardelle) Andersen; brothers-in-law, Boyd Falconer and George Scarlett; and niece, Jane Scholl in infancy.

She is survived by her son Richard Scholl and his wife, JoBeth of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Aaron Scholl and his wife Stephanie of Coralville, IA, Logan of West Des Moines and Morgan Scholl of Des Moines, IA; great grand children, Ryan and Ella Scholl of Corallville, IA; in-laws, Margaret Andersen of Omaha, NE, Ruth Andersen of Atlantic, IA, Doris Scarlett, Hilda Falconer, Harold and Phyllis Scholl all of Adair, IA, Rosalie and Gene Kopp of Anita, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Anita, Iowa.

Visitation with family will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28th at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Anita. There will be a lunch at the American Legion Hall in Anita following the memorial service. Burial of ashes will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Anita, Iowa, at a later date.
