Ruth Emmons

Ruth Emmons, 94, of Adair, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 26, 2012, at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa.


Ruth Avis Emmons was born December 2, 1917, to David and Clara (Lehse) McDowell on a farm near Adair. She attended school in Adair graduating with the class of 1935. She then went on to get her teaching certificate and taught in rural Guthrie County Schools for five years.


On March 18, 1942, Ruth married Dwight Emmons in Arcadia, California. They farmed in the Adair area from 1946 to 1989.


Ruth was a senior member of the Adair United Methodist Church serving on several committees, including the Board of Trustees and memorials.


Preceding Ruth in death were her husband, Dwight in 1997; son, Richard in 1943; daughter, Avis in 1980; and daughter, Betty in 2008.


Surviving Ruth are her son, Neil (Kay) Emmons of Cheyenne, WY; two granddaughters she raised, Bobbi Jo (Arnold) O'Neal of Charleston, SC and Jacki (Jason) Askelson of Johnston, IA; grandson, Brad (Mary Beth) Emmons of Cheyenne, WY; granddaughter, Christina (Keith) Hayes of Cheyenne, WY; a son-in-law, Chris (Donna) Schafer of Adair, IA; and eight great-grandchildren.


Visitation with family will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2012, at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair, IA.


The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2012, also at Hockenberry Funeral Home in Adair.


Burial will be in Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair, Iowa.

Ruth's family ask that memorials be made to Adair Fire & Rescue in lieu of flowers.
