Sidney Vernal Christiansen

December 11, 1922 — March 30, 2010

Sidney Vernal Christiansen, the son of Lars J. and Amalie Jeppesen Christiansen, was born December 11, 1922, near Kimballton, Iowa and died March 30, 2010, at his home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 19 days.
Sid was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. He attended parochial school in Kimballton, rural school in Audubon County, and then graduated from the Audubon High School with the Class of 1940. Sid then helped operate the family farm.
On December 12, 1944, he was united in marriage to Delores Hansen at Our Saviours Lutheran Church Parsonage in Audubon. Two daughters, Patty and Paula were born to this union. They moved to Burlington, Iowa where Sid was employed at the Iowa Army Munitions Plant for a short time. On April 16, 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his tour of duty he served in the Pacific Theatre where he was a boat pilot carrying men and freight from ship to shore. He was honorably discharged on April 4, 1946, and returned to farm with his father northeast of Gray, Iowa. They raised grain and livestock for many years. He operated his family farm and later also farmed Deloress family farm. During the past several years, Sid, has been content to just raise grain on the farm northeast of Gray. Along with farming, Sid has been a faithful and dependable part-time employee of Kessler Funeral Homes Inc. for many years.
Sid was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa. He was a member of Audubon VERITAS Lodge # 392, A.F. & A.M. and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. He was a member of the Dale Christensen Post #4119, V.F.W., Audubon and the Audubon Post #120 American Legion. He enjoyed playing golf and belonged to several card clubs. He enjoyed spending time drinking coffee with his family and friends and always looked forward to having breakfast with the biscuits and gravy group. Sid enjoyed young people and was always eager to help them.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother: Dale Christiansen; his sister: Frances and her husband Henry Kissler; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Junior C. Jensen, Bud Newman, Victor Madsen, Sr., Ila Mae and her husband Wayne Christensen, and Irene Andersen.
Survivors include his wife: Delores Christiansen of Audubon, IA, his daughters: Patty and husband Don Robertson of Northfield, MN, Paula and husband Rickie Caten of Bentonville, AR; his grandchildren: Jill Robertson and husband Jason Schulte of San Francisco, CA, Amy Robertson and fianc Jason Brown of Redondo Beach, CA, Jennifer Degen of Ft. Madison, IA; his great grandsons: Dale Degen and David Degen both of Ft. Madison; his brother and sisters: Irwin Christiansen of Stephenville, TX, Leona Newman of Arvada, CO, Elaine Jensen of Gray, IA; his sisters-in-law: Marjorie Christiansen of Rock Springs, WY, Betty Madsen of Audubon, nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Kimballton, IA at 2:00 P.M. with Military Graveside rites conducted by Dale Christensen Post #4119 V.F.W. and Audubon Post #120 American Legion.

Visitation:
The family will meet with friends on Friday, April 2, 2010, at 7:00 P.M. with a Masonic service at 7:30 at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon, IA.

Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Larry Lystig on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Audubon, Iowa.
