Silva Jane Christensen, the daughter of William Cecil and Lillian Johanna Petersen Larsen Savage, was born February 24, 1939, at her parents home in Viola Township, Audubon County, Iowa and died November 24, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center at the age of 70 years and 9 months.
Silva was baptized at the home of her grandparents John and Jensine Larsen on November 29, 1942, by Pastor Ibsen and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. She attended rural school at Sharon #5 in Sharon Township, Audubon County and then graduated from the Elk Horn High School with the Class of 1958. Silvas first job was candling eggs at the Elk Horn Produce.
On December 13, 1958, she was united in marriage to Harvey Andrew Christensen at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. Three children were born to this union. Silva was a homemaker for many years, helping Harvey farm and raising their children. She always enjoyed riding with Harvey while he made deliveries to the Omaha stockyards. Silva worked for Darrell and Marilyn Munch when they first opened their restaurant in Hamlin, Iowa and was well known for the wonderful pies that she made. She worked at Darrells Place for several years then sewed at Delongs in Exira for a short time. Later, she worked in the bakery at the Super Value grocery store in Audubon until she retired. Harvey died June 6, 2000. Following her retirement Silva was employed part time at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
Silva was a member of the Hamlin Lutheran Church in Hamlin. She was a member of the Exira Garden Club and enjoyed attending community events in Exira and surrounding communities. Silva was a member of the Exira Red Hat Firecrackers and was currently serving as the Queen Mum. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards with The Girls, and going out to eat. She had been in 4-H while growing up and later becoming a 4-H leader. She was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. Silva and Harvey enjoyed visiting the Casino and watching the dog races in Council Bluffs, Iowa as well as meeting their friends at the horse races at AK-SAR-BEN. She was an excellent cook and relished entertaining relatives and friends, but most of all she just enjoyed socializing.
Preceding her in death in addition to her husband Harvey; was her son: Jody Christensen; her parents; her in-laws: Marius and Hanna Christensen and her nephew: Michael Sorensen.
Survivors include her daughters: Peggy Christensen of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Sandra and her husband Dale Christensen of Adel, Iowa; her sister: Charlotte and husband Virgil Sorensen of Exira, Iowa; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Lois and husband Richard Nelson of Atlantic, Iowa; Bernard and wife Barb Christensen of Audubon, Iowa; her nieces and nephews: Donna and husband Ted Hansen of Audubon, Iowa; Denise and husband Larry Kendle of Gray, Iowa; David and wife Trudy Nelson of Exira, Iowa; Karla Christensen of Iowa City, Iowa; Carol and husband Brian Worth of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Kevin Christensen of Audubon, Iowa and other relatives.
Cemetery:
Inurnment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira.
Visitation:
The family will meet with friends Friday evening from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira, Iowa.
Service:
The Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor Steven Frock on Saturday, November 28, 2009, at 10:30 A.M. at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira, Iowa.
