Thomas Edward Young, the son of Ernest and Doris Mitchell Young, was born November 22, 1926, at his parents home near Viola Center, Iowa and died May 20, 2010, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 28 days.
Tom was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at the Methodist Church in Audubon. He attended Viola Consolidated Schools in Viola Center, Iowa graduating with the High School Class of 1944. He then helped operate the family farm. On September 8, 1945, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty he served with the 32nd Infantry Regiment as a radio operator in Korea. Tom was honorably discharged on January 29, 1947, and returned to the Viola area where he resumed farming with his father.
On June 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Umland at the Methodist Church in Manning, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. He continued to help his father farm then in 1952 Tom rented a farm near Coon Rapids, Iowa for a short time. They returned to the family farm and retired from farming in 1959. They moved to Lohrville, Iowa and Tom learned to be a carpenter. They lived in Lohrville for a few years then moved to Lake City, Iowa. Tom and family returned to the Audubon area where he first worked for Dan Franck for several years. Tom later opened his own business, Youngs Painting and Wallpapering. They operated the business for several years then closed the store and Tom concentrated on painting. He operated Youngs Painting Service until he retired in 1991. During retirement, Tom became the sexton and care taker of the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon until 2006.
Tom was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Audubon. He was a member of Audubon Post #120 American Legion and Dale Christensen Post #4119, V.F.W. Audubon, Iowa. He was a member of the Audubon Lions Club and also assisted at the Veterans Affairs Office in Audubon. Tom enjoyed woodworking and made many special keepsakes for his relatives and friends with his scroll saw.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his sisters: Marjorie and husband Bill Warren, Janet and husband Ralph Hargens; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Viola and husband Harold Jorgensen Virgene Andersen and Bob Wailes.
Survivors include his wife: Betty Young of Audubon, Iowa; his children: Terry and wife Roxanne Young of Sacramento, California, Jack Young of Phoenix, Arizona, and Cindy and husband Cal Hansen of Brayton, Iowa; his grandchildren: Tina Paulsen and friend Rod Hackwell and Tony Young and friend Katie Wheeler all of Exira, Iowa, Troy Young and friend Annie Butler of Atlantic, Iowa, Chris and wife Lindsey Young of Ross, Iowa, Aaron Young and friend Jess of New York City, New York, Sarah Young of Gothenburg, Nebraska, Jerica Hansen and friend Nick Koeppe of Exira, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Devin Paulsen, Leslie Paulsen, Brittany Paulsen, Ryan Hackwell, Shelby Young, Anthony Young, Shayle Young, Brooklyn Young, Kaelyn Young, Nola Young, Dempsey Young and Emma Jean Koeppe; his sister: Geraldine and husband Stanley S. Hansen of Elk Horn, Iowa,; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: LaVerne Wailes of Boone, Iowa, Barbara and husband Larry Linn of Atlantic, Iowa, Merlin and wife Joy Umland of Manning, Iowa, Willis and wife Thelma Umland of Gray, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Casket bearers will be his grandchildren: Tina Paulsen, Tony Young, Troy Young, Chris Young, Jerica Hansen, Sarah Young, Aaron Young and DarenFleishman. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Audubon Post #120 American Legion and Dale Christensen Post #4119, V.F.W. Audubon, Iowa.
Cemetery:
Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.
Visitation:
The family will meet friends Sunday afternoon at 2:00 P. M. at Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
Service:
Funeral services will be conducted by Pastor Dwayne Ferguson on Monday, May 24, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa.
