Tommie D. Gray, 68, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Tommie Dale Gray was born on October 15, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Earl and Georgia (Breeden) Gray.
Tommie served his country by serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959 and then in the United States Army from 1959 until 1964.
On June 29, 1985, Tommie married Helen Abild in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Tommie was an over the road truck driver for more that 35 years, driving for numerous companies.
Throughout his life, Tommie lived in numerous places, home was where he hung his hat.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Amvets, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Tommie was a fan of NASCAR and professional wrestling and enjoyed watching westerns and going fishing
Surviving Tommie are his wife, Helen Gray of Atlantic, Iowa; four daughters, Debbie Dorsett of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Cathy Richardson and her husband, Larry of Omaha, Nebraska, Karen Gray of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Melissa Ramirez of Elko, Nevada; five sons, Calvin Gray and his wife, Roxanne of Omaha, Nebraska, Tom Gray and his wife, Sharon of Lyman, Iowa, Joe Gray and his wife, Laura of Tremont, Illinois, Chuck Gray and his wife, Erin of Atlantic, Iowa, Darren Gray and his wife, Jeri of Peoria, Illinois; four step-daughters, Cindy Schlake and her husband Kevin of Atlantic, Iowa, Robin Mills and her friend, Ervin Suko of Atlantic, Iowa, Ronda Wilkenson and her husband, Tim of Red Oak, Janet Christensen of Red Oak, Iowa; two step-sons, John Abild and his fiancé, Diane of Atlantic, Iowa, Bob Butters and his wife Becky of Virginia Beach, Virginia; 27 grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; his former wife, Caroline Gray of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and five nephews.
Preceding Tommie in death were his parents, Earl and Georgia Gray of rural Missouri; two sisters, Beverly Fahrmeier and Norma Jean Lawson; and a grandson, Josef Gray, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 18, 2006, in the chapel at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic with Pastor Carlton Bazer of the Light of the Word Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa, officiating. Following the services, a fellowship and luncheon will be held at the Eagles Lodge in Atlantic.
Visitation will be Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and continuing until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m.
Burial of ashes will take place at a later date as the family has chosen cremation following the funeral services.
Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
